Remembrance Day Tribute
It was 11 o’clock on November 11th 1918 when guns fell silent across the western front in Europe, and allied forces declared an end to the war with Germany.
As war veterans and military top brass gathered together at the Cenotaph in Whitehall central London, a two minute silence was held to mark the 97th anniversary of the end of the first world war, and remember those who fought and died for Britain. The service included a reading from an extract by singer Cery Matthews,
from the Times October 1915 about the deaths of 41 only-sons in battle.
The Queen held a two minute silence privately, with her family at Buckingham Palace, and poppy petals were placed by the public in the fountains at the annual Silence in the Square event, held by The Royal British Legion in Trafalgar Square.
Tomorrow the French ambassador Sylvie Bermann, will present 19 British veterans with France’s highest distoinction, the Légion d’honneur, for their role in liberating France during the second world war at her residence in Kensington.
A service was also attended by the Princess Royal at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
In one of many services held across Australia, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall commemorated the 97th anniversary of the end of the first world war with Australian priminister Malcom Turnbull, and his wife Lucy at the wall of remembrance at the National War Memorial in Canberra.
