I'm stressed this morning because I have an article due but I can't work just yet—Ariana's hysterically crying. She doesn't want me to leave her at preschool. She's not used to the strange classroom with the mini tables and chairs and new children's faces.
"Mama…Mama," Ariana screams. I try demonstrating how much fun it is gluing colored tissue paper to a paper plate as my cell phone rings. It's the grade school secretary—Samantha threw up in class.
"OK, I'm leaving now but I'm 20 minutes away," I say.
"Well, she's here in the office—we cleaned her up the best we could."
Great, so now I'm not only worried about how sick Samantha feels physically, but I can't stop thinking about how she feels emotionally, plopped in an office chair garnished with puke.
I hand Ariana over to her preschool teacher and bolt. I hear Ariana screaming "MAMA!" as I book down the hall. That "Bad Mommy" feeling is sinking in right about now.
Driving to get Samantha, my stomach's in knots and I'm trying not to speed. I wonder if the upchucking is anxiety (she said that morning that she didn't want to go to school), or if she's really sick.
We get home and she hurls. OK, she's definitely sick. Between the vomiting and tears, I stay by her side, holding her hair back just as my mom did for me every time I got sick. The deadlines will have to wait. Phone calls, errands, housework…everything must wait.
I'm sure this isn't how Samantha wanted to kick off her kindergarten year, but she'll get through it. And hopefully, when she rejoins her class, the children won't remember the barf—they'll just be happy Samantha's back.—Julie Weingarden Dubin
