Making Whipped Soap

How to Make Whipped Soap

Whipped soap is made with a blend of rich oils that are beaten until they reach a smooth, fluffy texture. Whipped soap is similar to cold process soap because both use ingredients that do not have to be heated, however, whipping is faster to process at the beginning but does require more time to cure. With a low pH level, whipped soap is mild enough for everyday use, even on your face. It is a moisturizing cleanser with a creamy, rich bubbly lather. Making whipped soap at home is great way to control what ingredients go into your soap, allowing you to avoid unhealthy additives. Follow these steps to learn how to make whipped soap.

Steps

  1. Put on safety goggles, gloves and long sleeves.
  2. Measure by weight 4.42 oz.(125.3 grams) of lye into a small container.
  3. Measure By weight 12 oz.ice cold distilled water into a pitcher. Slowly pour the lye into the water. NOT THE WATER INTO THE LYE! It is important to use ice cold water because lye increases water temperature and you do not want it to get too hot.
  4. Set the lye and water mixture aside.
  5. Line your soap molds with wax or parchment paper.
    • Soap molds can be purchased at many hobby or craft stores. You can also use loaf pans and then cut the finished soap into bars. Cardboard cylinders can also be used because you can cut right through the cardboard to make round bars. Some recommend cutting your soap with a wire. Wire makes smoother cuts and leaves less broken pieces than cutting with a knife.
  6. Put 7 oz.(207 ml) vegetable shortening and 2 oz. (59 ml) shea butter into the bowl of a stand mixer if you have one.
    • The mixing phase of this whipped soap recipe can take up to an hour, so a stand mixer is a better than a hand mixer since it can run on its own.
  7. Add 7 oz.(207 ml) palm oil and 7 oz. (207 ml) coconut oil to the mixing bowl.
  8. Turn your mixer on low and mix until the solid fats begin to smooth out.
  9. Pour 2 oz.(59 ml) castor oil and 7 oz. (207 ml) olive oil into the other fats slowly.
  10. Beat on medium speed until the fats are smooth and fluffy. This can take up to an hour.
  11. Add the lye and water solution very slowly.Keep the mixer on low speed and add small amounts of the lye solution at a time until it is fully blended.
  12. Include 2 oz.(59 ml) of fragrance oil if you like.
  13. Blend again on low until the lye and fragrance are thoroughly blended into your homemade whipped soap.
  14. Transfer the soap into your prepared molds and allow to set for 24 hours. This method makes approximately 12 rectangular bars, but this will vary depending on your soap molds.
  15. Remove the soap from the molds and let sit in cool, dark and dry place for approximately 4 weeks to allow the lye to go through the chemical process of converting to soap (this process is called curing).Curing is important to let any excess water evaporate from the soap before use. It also makes the soap last longer, become milder, and have richer lather. Soap made with lye may dry or even burn your skin if it is not properly cured.
  16. Store in a cool, dry place.

There is absolutely no cream used in the soap. The cream would become rancid. You could use cocoa butter or shea butter instead of palm oil.
    Thanks!
