7 GORGEOUS Romantic Hairstyles
Roses are a traditional symbol of romance—so why not let them inspire your style? If hair is wavy, let it air-dry. If it's straight, create slight bends all over by wrapping small, random sections of dry hair around a two-inch-barrel curling iron, then spritz with hair spray. (At the Rodarte fashion show, hairstylist Odile Gilbert used John Frieda Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray [, at drugstores].) Take two-inch sections of hair slightly above each ear and braid four to five inches, then connect them in the back and coil together into a small bun. Secure the ends of the "rose" with bobby pins. Then grab a two-inch section of hair from underneath the bun and braid it; stop two inches from the bottom and secure with a clear elastic. Waves can easily be glamorous, but it's texture that makes them romantic, says New York City hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins. To get the effect, spritz a sea-salt spray all over damp strands (try Organix Moroccan Sea Salt Spray, , at drugstores), part down the center, then blast with a dryer while finger-tousling. When hair is dry, wrap two-inch sections all over your head around a 1 1/4-inch curling wand (try Remington T-Studio Silk Ceramic Wide Curling Wand, , at Target). Finish with more salt spray: "Tip your head over to each side and spray into the hair for long-lasting hold and volume," says Hawkins. This style, more than any other, will help you learn to embrace (and love!) your natural hair texture.
Florence Welch puts aside her "rock star" status for a night to channel a Renaissance princess. Emulate her by coating fingertips in a bit of texturizing cream, then working through damp hair (try Redken Tousle Whip 04 Soft Texturizing Cream-Wax, .50, for salons). Blow-dry hair while finger-styling, then pull your hair back into a low side ponytail at the nape of your neck (if hair's shorter than mid-back length, use a clip-in ponytail), letting a few strands in front hang loose. Swing the tail to one side, near your ear, then start braiding it so it curves up and around your head like a headband. Secure the end of the braid behind the back of your ear with bobby pins, and place a few in random crooks of the braid for hold.
Work an egg-size blob of mousse through damp hair, then blow-dry smooth, advises Hawkins. (Try Pantene Pro-V Volume Triple Action Volume Mousse, , at drugstores.) Make a deep side part, then curl two-inch sections of hair with a 1 1/4-inch curling iron. Take a two-inch chunk of hair and push it across your forehead and down over your cheekbone; pin at your temple. Bring the rest of your hair back to the nape of your neck to make a low ponytail, and secure with a hair elastic. Twist the tail until it coils into itself, then secure with bobby pins. Finish with two jeweled barrettes (try or Etsy) placed an inch apart on the side with less hair, and one more above the bun.
Here's a secret for all you GOT fans: Cersei's sporting a wig. But Kevin Alexander, hair designer for the show, says anyone can copy the look: Work styling mousse through damp hair (try Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam, , ), and blow-dry while finger-scrunching. Wrap one-inch sections of dry hair around a medium-size-barrel curling iron; when finished, run fingers through hair, pulling each curl to loosen, then part hair down the center. Split a one-inch section of hair on the right side, and twist the two pieces together, securing at the back of the head with a bobby pin. Repeat on the left.
No skinny gym pony here! To pull this off, spritz a volumizing hair spray all over (roots too), then blow-dry hair smooth with a boar-bristle brush, lifting the brush upward as you go. Try Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray (, ). Part hair (the models in this show wore different parts, says Bumble and Bumble hairstylist Rolando Beauchamp), then secure into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Insert a tail comb horizontally into the hair in the middle of the back of your head, then gently pull it outward for puffiness. Blast the tail with hair spray, then lightly fluff.
