3 Easy Ways to Strengthen Your Heart
We asked members of theWoman’s DayHeart Health Advisory Board for the advice they wish their patients would follow. Their answers will surprise you.
"Being constantly connected to your phone, laptop or tablet keeps you on high alert—24/7. This overstimulation can result in a chronic state of anxiety, which may cause stress-related high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease. I tell my patients to disconnect for 30 minutes a day and spend that time doing something beneficial for their health."
Tracy Stevens, MD, cardiologist, Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas City, MO
"People often believe multivitamins are good for the heart, but many are high in choline, a B vitamin that has been linked to heart disease, while calcium supplements have been associated with an increased risk of heart attack. My advice: Get your nutrients from a good diet instead."
Martha Gulati, MD, director, preventive cardiology and women's cardiovascular health, Ohio State University
"One in five adults has sleep apnea, a disorder that leads to loud snoring and high blood pressure. Talk to your MD if snoring disrupts your slumber or if you often wake up tired. Sleep apnea can be treated, and there's a bonus: Curing it can speed up your metabolism, helping you lose weight."
Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director, Joan H.
